In both places I've preferred them vertically. I find the imaging tighter. Because this positions the bass speaker either high or low I think it's worth trying both ways. One never can predict where the ideal bass response will occur in a given room (my Dunlavies had their sub speakers on both the bottom and top). I've also added an Adam sub which creates a killer full range system (once the sub correctly positioned and dialed in correctly). Although subs are not supposed to be directional, I arrived at positioning the sub in front (just off center) and equidistant with the mains to the listening position so the arrival times are all lined up.
